Our budget is limited, so we must deny help to almost one out of every three elligible people who complete an application. Cuts to national, state, and local funding for health and human services, public safety and education are the predominant issues affecting our community. Cuts to Department of Health and Human Services will be more dramatic and severe than the last biennium. General Assistance, Project Independence, prescription drug benefit and access to durable medical equipment will be gone. Additionally, alcohol and drug treatment along with mental health treatment will be eliminated from the standard Oregon Health Plan. As a result of these cuts, the need for legal services will increase dramatically; however previous cuts have already significantly diminished our ability to provide the documentation needed to successfully represent our clients in the area of state and federal public benefits. Some of our clients are becoming hungrier, homeless, unable to purchase prescription drugs and unable to be attended by physicians.
